Kimberley Show Dates

Dear PMP,

there has been some confusion about the dates for our show in Kimberley. I think that we are fortunate to be in their calendar  and hope that  a large number of us will participate.
It will give us an opportunity to show work that may be going around again....still only pick your best. We will attempt to earn an annual event in Kimberley.
The dates have just been confirmed at April 30-May 25.

If you are interested, please start getting your bio and cv organized. We will need them for our PMP show at
Pynelogs, as well. The dates or reality of that show will depend upon the jury process, which is no big deal for us...right??
Send  me your paperwork by e-mail once you have it in tip top shape.

We will paint for two days in Windermere again. Nov 20/21. Build inventory!!

Dear PMP,
I had coffee with a friend who has a great deal more experience paiting than most of us. She gave me some advice and it hit home.(when the student  is ready the teacher will appear ).
She opined that I am spending a lot more time trying to sell my and others' work,  than painting.
In art school she learned that, if we paint to sell we might fail to evolve as we should (as artists).

She thinks that we should leave the shows to those who do that i.e Pynelogs, The Tour etc. and that we should paint to those deadlines if we wish. She thinks that 2 shows a year is enough to aim for; that we should paint and paint for us. This is a conversation that we have been dancing around for a while, but it has gelled for me.
The Heritage House is perfect for painting and hanging for those who rent space there. It is not yet ready to be an interactive centre with public traffic. The rest of us have to wait for shows to hang our work.

On the other hand it is hard to deny that we have to paint to pay for our habit. Each of us has to look at the options that suit.

I am going to paint at home while I can (Robert is away for the summer) and try to take my friend's advice. I am going to try to tone down the hussle, which saps energy.
I am sharing this musing with you, because it struck me as something that I needed to hear.

PMP Gallery Show

Hi all,

Thanks, Sandra, for that post and for getting the ball rolling on talking about what improvements we might want to look at for the next show. I agree that it was awkward and frustrating for a few of us at Pynelogs yesterday morning trying to sort out the confusion and get the paintings removed.

After being the liaison this year, I have a few suggestions for improving things next year.

1. All showing painters need to volunteer and/or participate in some way during the two-week show.  Most of the painters are fantastic and ready to put their hand up to participate in making the show a success.  If some painters are not involved, it's unfair to the rest. There are several ways painters can participate and I suggest that every painter needs to find a way if they want to be in the show.

2.  Everyone needs to be clear about the Gallery requirements.  When you enter the show, you agree to those requirements and you have to supply the information requested.  It's not optional.

3.  Drop off and pick up should go more smoothly.  Painters have to have firm arrangements for that, so we don't have the confusion of yesterday.

So, those are my suggestions and I think the group should discuss and decide some things before the next call out later this year.  I'm happy to help and support whoever is willing to act as next year's liaison.

Thanks to all.  It was a good show!

Pynelogs PMPGallery Show

Our show at Pynelogs was a success. Some of us sold work and the exposure to the gallery audience is always a plus. There was some excellent work and I think that all are showing their best work. That was the good part. Now for the bad part.

Not all of our members lived up to their obligations to the gallery. It is unfortunate that some didn't as it puts a black mark on us all. The rules to participate in this show are clearly defined by the Gallery. Here are some of the rules some did not follow and surprisingly got away with but won't in the future.
  • You must provide a Bio/ Artist Statement
  • You must provide a  Curriculum Vitae (CV) even if it is just a statement that you are self taught.
  • All wall art is to be properly framed and easy to hang  (proper wire hangers on the back) this applies to all. They need to have this type of control to keep the show truly professional.
  • Pieces were to be picked up on Sun. May 27 between 3-4  not Monday. Those of us who picked up our work Sunday were surprised that so many pieces were not picked up on that day.
  •  Monday when we came to drop off our three pieces for the following show we were  left to explain why our members hadn't picked up their work the day before.
  •  I know that their was a slight misunderstanding about repeat work for the current show. So some did come and try to leave or left work that had just hung for two weeks. But that was a misunderstanding with the new staff at the Gallery that didn't know that the previous weeks work was to be exchanged for other work  which could have been in other shows but not" the just closing" show.
  • Some people never came to pick up their work at all even on Monday and so among Sandra B, Laila J and I we had to take the work that was left and hope that it didn't get damaged because we didn't have packing material to transport your work. I know that sometimes we can't always drop off or pick up our own work.  But firm arrangements should have been made with someone of your choosing  so that Pynelogs  does not have to scramble around trying to get work picked off the walls so they can hang the new show on  Mondays. This is not acceptable. We hung around until almost noon to see if you were just late.  We collected at least 20 or 30 or more paintings for people that did not live up to their gallery obligations. The Gallery has no storage space for unsold pieces.
  • I know that there will be discussion about this in the coming days.  I believe that  PMP members who have let us down should not be allowed to show with us in the future.  I know that there will be some whining but this has happened before and it does not reflect well on those of us who are trying to present a professional image.  Who did you think was going to look after your work after the show closed? There is no art fairy unless maybe Laila  who did all the extra emailing and stuff to help you participate in this show and then had to drag paintings home to be stored somewhere in her house........until you people find them. Please pickup your work at our houses promptly, we have no more room than you.  Hopping Mad!!!! Sandra H

Save Paint for weeks.

This product was suggested by  Carol Marine  one of my favourite painters.
This is a neat way to save paint on your palette. Click on this link
http ://www.paintsavers.org/  and  check it out.

Hope everyone remembers to use the blog to share information. I seem to be getting a lot of emails again.
If you need a refresher on how to post your ideas here just give me a call and I can help you.

I'm now back in Canada and looking forward to painting with the PMP again.
